Caring for Cut Flowers

Keeping cut flowers fresh isn't always so straightforward. Like most things in life, you can't treat everything the same. Variables matter.

We recommend cutting flowers first thing in the AM or just before the sun sets, but not in the middle of the day. Place them in clean water ASAP & indoors out of direct sun. Leave them to rest for at least a few hours before arranging. For fickle foliage I prefer to cut the night before. This longer resting period can be crucial.

By changing the water every 1-2 days, you can avoid having to use floral preservatives. This is important because not all flowers actually do well with floral treatments. In fact, I’ve had flowers droop after floral preserve is added. If anything, we may add a drop of bleach to the vase to deter bacteria, but if you are changing the water frequently you can skip this step.

Enjoying flowers indoors is one beautiful bonus to gardening. Have you found any of these tips to be helpful? Let us know which ones in the comments!
