Spicy Golden Milk

I’ve been making golden milk for myself and my kids as an occasional nurturing bedtime treat for several years now. I’ve always used ground spices up until… I tasted the heavenly golden milk latte at Undercurrent Coffee recently and my taste buds were floored. I am not even kidding. Later a friend suggested I add a shot of espresso and I was once again…floored. I liken it to a comforting gingersnap latte. The traditional golden milk has been around for a long time and has many medicinal qualities. I already love the spices that go into this on their own, but together they are incredible. Here is my attempt at the coffee shop version.

Golden Milk

You will need

1“ fresh grated ginger

1” fresh grated turmeric

1/8 tsp ground ceylon cinnamon

a pinch of ground cardamom

a pinch of black pepper

2 tsp coconut sugar or honey (optional)

1.5 cups of oat or whole milk

In a saucepan gently warm up the milk on the stove. Peel and grate the fresh turmeric and ginger. Add to the milk while it simmers. Add the remaining ingredients and let steep for 5-10 minutes. Stir occasionally. Pour through a sieve or into a french press to strain the mixture. Sip from your favorite mug and savor. If you’d like to try with coffee, simply brew half of a pour over and fill the remaining half of your cup with golden milk. Enjoy!
