Why Cover Crop

Can you find the lady bug amidst the crimson clover? A favorite cover crop of mine, crimson clover not only enriches the soil, it acts as a living mulch shading out & keeping unwanted weeds from popping up. It also prevents the moisture from evaporating too quickly and forming a crusty(lifeless) top layer of soil.

More Than That Though It Enables A Healthy Habitat For Microbes In The Soil To Get To Work So That Future Plants Can Flourish.

All of these moving parts aerate the soil removing the need for a tiller. This act alone aids in keeping the diverse biology in tact. We ask them to go a step further and interplant them with other crops like orlaya and other cool season blooms. Insects like the lady bug are safe and ready to feast on aphids nearby keeping them under control. OH..and we do relish utilizing crimson clover in as many bouquets as possible!
